A simple recipe to start your day
Ahhh, breakfast… the “most important meal of your day” right? Your body has been fasting all night, digesting and processing everything you have taken in the day before (ideally) and now we get to break our fast. What better way to do that than this bright bowl of sunshine!
This healthy recipe can be as simple or extravagant as your tastebuds and wallet choose. So, get creative and build your chia pudding bowl with us!
Prepare your base – Chia Pudding
Chia seeds are a great source of plant based protein packed with a nutritional punch! Full of antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber; these seeds are a great base for this hearty breakfast bowl that are sure to keep you coming back for more.
We prepared ours with coconut milk, vanilla bean extract and a dash of cardamom. Whisk these ingredients together and slowly add in your chia seeds. You can also add these into a mason jar and shake vigorously.
Play around with your portioning, adding more or less milk as you’d like. Remember, you can always add more!
Set in the fridge for at least 30 minutes; we let them soak overnight.
Build your bowl
Here is where the real fun and creativity get to kick in. Tap into your intuition and build your bowl for the season; Hello Ayurveda!
With the convenience of modern day shopping, we can easily forget that our food has its time of year to shine. According to Ayurveda, there are 3 seasons of the year: Kapha (late winter/early spring), Pitta (summer), and Vata (late fall). This ancient practice teaches us to eat with the season to help optimize our health and wellbeing. Yes, it can be very overwhelming… BUT- our favorite motto is K.I.S.S. it! (Keep It Simple Stup… ugh… Silly)
Check out your local farmers markets, what are they offering? There’s your answer!
This particular bowl was part of our Spring Renewal Retreat, so berries are in high yield, and oh man– were they delicious!
So, build your bowl with fruit that is in season and let your eyes enjoy your food just as much as your tongue.
Toppings to Balance your Dosha
Whether you are simply topping your bowl for the season or fine tuning your dish to balance your doshic imbalance, this is a fun way to play around and see what works best for you.
In our bowl, we used the following toppings:
- Fresh Berries: blackberries, raspberries, blueberries
- Bananas
- Pumpkin Seeds
- Coconut Flakes
- Lemon Zest + Fresh Juice (don’t knock it ’til you try it, we were hesitant at first, too)
- Cinnamon
- Cardamom
- Sea Salt
- Maple Syrup (optional)
Once you have built your bowl, offer some love and gratitude! (for the land, farmers, stores that you purchased, etc.)
Enjoy, bite by bite!
